When people make things out of sheet metal, a lot of the time they have to bend it in certain spots to get the shape they want. The process of bending these sheets is known as forming. Historically, workers did this bending by hand or with simple tools such as hammers. It was a tough job! But this is the world before CNC press brakes that do the bending for only us and make the job easier and safer.

CNC is short for computer numerical control. That means a computer directs the machine’s movements. The computer dictates how far the metal must bend and at which points the bends are to be made to the press brake. So this is very useful because it allows us to speed up the bending process and do it way more accurately. It also means that workers no longer have to manually bend the metal, a tiring and sometimes dangerous job. Bending the metal becomes much safer with CNC press brakes.

CNC press brakes are highly versatile, which means they can bend sheet metal into various designs and measurements. And this is all made possible because the press brake has interchangeable tools, so different bends or shapes can be made. Tools can be a V or a U or any curved shape necessary for the task at hand.

Secondly, if any issue happens in the bend process, the computer can also send warnings. If the metal is too thick for a given bend, for example, it alerts the operator. It may even recommend a different tool or technique to make sure the bending is done properly. This also avoids errors and keeps the production workflow working seamlessly.
